Will-o'-the -Wisp is not merely an imaginary creature. It is seen mainly in marshy places and appears like a flame darting a few feet above the ground.When it is neared it seems to recede farther away, thus leading it's victim out of his way.It is thought to be done by escape gases,chiefly marsh gas.The expression of "following a will -o'-the-Wisp"is used to refer to pursuing a hard-earned scheme.
