How did Canada get the name by which we know it ?

A Portuguese named Cortereal sailed up the St.Lawrence ,hoping to find that it would provide a route to India .His men were very disappointed and cried aloud, "Canada," which in their language meant "nothing here."

The native heard the Expression so often that it came into common use,and layer ,when other Europeans arrived ,they were greeted with "Canada," the native imagining that by crying out this word they would make the Newcomers depart as quickly as the Portuguese had done.The name however , suck to the country ,and that is how Canada cane to be christened.
